BOLLYBEATZ JOURNEY ...

BollyBeatz , the name has become the closest synonym for anything Bollywood in USA,Paris, India and Singapore. Nidhi Mehta founded Stepz Dance Inc. in 2002. The dance Company was the first of its kinds in Bay Area , CA. The concept took off very well. Nidhi had just moved to the USA and quit her job with McKinsey & Co.! Dance came to her by chance. As she believes - it’s destiny. She had never thought that she'd be choreographing and dancing at the biggest bollywood shows and productions and running centers across the globe.

The class that started from a garage went onto to become a household name for Bollywood Dance instruction. From the garage in Palo Alto to the first studio leased in Sunnyvale, Stepz soon expanded to 14 classes within 3 years with 6 instructors on board and two stage productions each year.

In 2005, Nidhi moved to India to be closer to the extended family. She sold Stepz and moved to Chennai and thus BollyBeatz was born. Chennai welcomed her classes with open arms with media going crazy writing about her classes, her spirit and the amazing dance fitness concept which was helping normal people dance, haven fun and lose weight!. From every local newspaper to publications like India Today and Femina - all wanted a piece of her.

In 2007, it was time to move again. By then she was confident and looking forward to a new destination and a new city to start her classes. Classes in Chennai were handed over to her two instructors trained by her and she moved in November 2007 to Singapore. By January 2008 Nidhi had started teaching her classes at True Yoga , one of the premier Yoga Centers in Singapore. Her class attracted people of all ethnicities, Japanese and Chinese mostly. They loved her choreography, her style and her simple way of teaching to a layman. Within 3 months she started training instructors and opened her new studios in Orchard, Novena and Siglap... and thus a new journey began.

Today BollyBeatz is the first name that pops into anyone's mind who talks bollywood. She conducts corporate classes, TV choreography, school workshops, team building workshops, Footworks workshop at the Esplanade, off site workshops for corporates and performances with her team. She has also taught dances to extras who work in Bollywood Movies. She was invited to Paris to run a 10 day Bollywood Dance workshop in April 2008 and plans to make it an annual event.

BollyBeatz has opened franchises in Texas, Silicon Valley and by next year plans to open more centers across the world, with Pondicherry, Paris and New Delhi in immediate pipeline! Its a low investment franchise for anyone who loves to dance and dances well or has an aerobics certification. It gives you the flexibility of time and a way to meet great people... some of whom will become your closest friends.

To see Nidhi in action is to witness something special, spectacular, and unforgettable. From Bay Area to India to Singapore to Paris, her journey is nothing less than awe-inspiring.Starting at an early age, she has had intense training in a variety of classical dance forms in the world, like Odissi, Kathak and Bharatnatyam. She later went on to pursue other global dance forms like Jazz, Hip Hop and Salsa. The amalgamation of her versatility, creativity and on-stage energy has made her win numerous dance competitions.

Nidhi's athletic moves, abundant energy, and unique choreography has made her a favorite in media, corporates and among her students. While making her own identity in the dance world, she continues to contribute and work with the less fortunate by conducting workshops for such organizations or helping them with monetary contributions from her dance school. This is her way of giving back to the society and to God who has given her so much!

Nidhi believes that dance is not defined by any one technique and it shares no boundaries. Dance, like other performing arts, is a gift. As a teacher and an artist, it is not only a privilege but a moral responsibility for us to share this gift and spread the joy of dance. It empowers everyone with more confidence, happiness and a fun way to stay fit..... so with this follow the journey of BollyBeatz, its founder and its students through this blog....and spread the joy around!!!!

ESPLANADE FOOTWORK CLASS A SOLD OUT !!!!

It was a SOLD-OUT footworks class in conjuction with the Esplanade. Everyone came in different shape, sizes, age and race. All 40 of them sweat it all out in the name of BOLLYWOOD. It's always encouraging to see enthusiastic people learning and spreading this dance form/style to other people. What's more- after the success of Slumdog Millionaire, Jai Ho is like an anthem for BOLLYWOOD!! All of them got a chance to learn a chreograph dance by Nidhi Metha, on the song JAI HO.

Interview WIth Anamika Dinodiya for Lifestyle Section

From teaching dance in a garage to studios and workshops around the world, Nidhi Mehta proves it that she does have the formula to help people lose weight in a fun way! She is the founder of her company Bolly Beats, which is a dance fitness class with creative choreography on Bollywood songs. A class where you can go in with two left feet and be transformed into a good dancer, while you manage your weight.

Here’s what dance instructor/choreographer, Nidhi Mehta, has to say about her dancing journey.

What do you do to keep fit?
I dance! I’m instructing three BollyArobix classes a week.

How did you come up with the concept of Bolly Arobix?

In the US I only did choreography classes, where I had a student who used to come to my classes and she used to always tell me ‘I love your classes I hate the gym and this is the only way for me to exercise. But I can’t remember chorography’s. Can you come up with something where I don’t have to remember anything, just come to class and dance for fitness.” So that’s where the motivation came from.

What made you create Power Bhangra?
That came because Bolly Arobix was very feminine songs and movement, so when the men wanted to come they would shy away. So Bhangra being a bit more man-ly, the men feel more comfortable with the movements.

Did you always want to choose dance as your career?
No, It was never planned, even when I did Shiamak Davar’s classes it was only to de-stress from reading all those books during my MBA. It was never an intention to perform or teach.

What made you want to teach dance?
My first instinct to teach dance was I thought I was a good teacher. There is a big difference from looking good, being a good dancer and teaching dance. Being a teacher you have to be able to associate and be able to relate to every one who comes to your class. And they could be people with two left feet. And have the creativity to teach them the steps in different ways so they get it.

Who do look up to as your dancing inspirations?
I don’t idolize anyone there are a lot of good dancers out there. But I do want to create an “umph” factor in my dance and teach my students to do so like the Pussy Cat Dolls. And I look up to Shiamak Davar being a good choreographer and for the creativity he has.

What dance training have you done?
I started dancing at the age of seven, and have trained in a variety of classical dance forms in the world, like Odissi, Kathak, Bharatnatyam and global forms like Jazz, Hip Hop and Salsa.

How would you define dance?
Dance is your creativity expressed in movements. It’s all about expressing your self.

If you were granted three wishes what would they be?
If I were granted three wishes they would be one, my children inherit dance from both my husband and me. Two, I open up more franchise dance companies all over the world and do more dance workshops. And lastly, I continue doing what I do, enjoying every aspect of my career while balancing family and work.

What are the requirements to joining Bolly Arobix classes?
No such requirements you can have two left feet even, just come with a notion of enjoying the class and have an interest in dance.

So try out Bolly Arobix! Power Bhangra! Belly Beatz! And coming up soon is Bollywood Zumba, which will have Salsa, Belly dancing, Hip Hop and all those forms in one class. So what are you waiting for? Take to the floor, shake a hip, move your body, tone up and start a fitness routine that will keep you on your toes forever.

NOTE FROM LAVANIA (BOLLYBEATZ INSTRUCTOR)

I could say I found a new family for myself after joining Bollybeatz. Be it when I'm at a crossroad in terms of career or personal relationship, Nidhi has been more than just my dance guru. She has been my well-wisher and still is. Am grateful for being part of the Bollybeatz family and always look forward to attending my dance classes coz' it gives me happiness in abundance.

My students are not just my students. We have become close friends and if not for this opportunity, I would not have been able to forge such close ties with my new found friends. They continue to support my classes and we have so much fun!

Thanks Nidhi and cheers to Bollybeatz!

NOTE FROM KHAI

I feel like dancing when i see Madhuri Dixit do her dhak dhak dance or plastic Aishwarya Rai do her own plastic spastic version of Crazy Kiya Re or Maliika Sherawat flaunt her va va voom body during Mayya Mayya. Got the idea why this "malay girl" is so in love with bollywood? When i enrolled myself in Nidhi's class my main goal was to haveMASALA FUN! to meet people, and of course grooving to the latest bollywood songs (and of course gossiping about the bollywood stars).

Nidhi has made such a safe space for all her students to let loose, groove and at the same time lose weight. Hey its not easy to lose weight- but if you're having fun at the same time, it's so easy! You learn the steps, you buy Bollybeatz Volume Cd, you dance, you make mistakes and you don't have to be a born dancer to join BOLLYBEATZLLP!!

I can honestly say my obsession with hindi cinema has grown over time (and its not because of slumdog millionaire), its because Bollybeatz is the new way for me to escape IN A POSITIVE GOOD WAY. JAI HO BOLLYBEATZ !!

NOTE FROM PARVEENA

"Your classes are very good. I have learnt lots of new steps that I can use anywhere when I'm in a party or club with my friends. More over it’s a totally new concept of dancing as compare to the old one. The moves, the body language and the feel are all different. It’s a very good workout. I sweat a lot and learn a lot from the class. Get to meet other girls and share our views on different things."

Parveena (Singapore)

NOTE FROM SHILPA

"For the past ten months I have always looked forward to that one day of the week when I attend the bollychoreo class with bollybeatz. Nidhi is a very enthusiastic teacher. Being a dancer myself it was easy for me to pick up the steps but Nidhi's peppy attitude and encouragement makes even students with two left feet dance. The dance routines are fun and at the same time its a great workout. Each choreography has different steps which makes it even more interesting."

Shilpa Sharma (Singapore)

NOTE FROM VAANI

"I really really miss your classes in India! Wish you didn't have to go.The thing I like most about your classes is the energy that you personally bring to the workout. I have never felt a dull moment during class. Your routines are catchy and challenging. We never felt they were repetitive. You really made a 41year old feel good that I could dance too!.
If there is any chance that you are moving again, PLEASE PLEASE consider coming back to India! "

Vaani Anand (Chennai,India)

NOTE FROM MALLIKA

"I've taken Nidhi's classes ever since she started them in the US. I wouldn't think of dropping out even when I was pregnant. The energy and enthusiasm in her classes was just great. She not only teaches you, she also motivates you to do better. And if you're not in class, she always asks you where you were when you missed class. In Nidhi, I've not only found a great dance teacher, but also a great friend. Truly miss her classes, and hope she moves back to the US!"

NOTE FROM MICHELLE

I am passionate about Bollywood dancing but don't really know if I am now qualified cause some parts of the body(now needs a little alcho boost as u hv witnessed), at my age, dont move like they used to.

I did have a dance background way back in our college days(talking more than 10-15yrs ago here). Won a lot of competitions(english dance-more jive) with my dance partner Hemu Sinha-today a big choreographer in the Hindi cinema though he did not manage to become a big hit like Farah Khan, his dance partner after I left.
Sometimes looking back, I miss the good old dancing days( especially when I start to watch Greece and dirty dancing etc..). The heart starts to then miss a beat and the legs start to shake.

Soonest I started work, which was at a very early age, and then got married, dancing soon dwindled out of my live as I left India too & alongwith all dance connections, and as you know, other responsbilities of mother, wife etc.. come into being and then now our move to Singapore since 4 yrs now, from Dubai.

For the 1st 2 years here, I was battling my way at my new 'housewife' term & adjusting to the realities of Singapore versus Dubai( which really spoils you when used to alot of luxury).
Now, since I have come around it and started to do something for myself, like get back to some aerobics(dance) exercise or some dancing activity when on browsing the internet the 'dance on us studio' popped up & then your site for a new kind of aerobics. Hardly believing I could get back to dancing, I came for a look & see trial class & hooked since then. After 7 classes my body is showing signs of opening up so I guess I can push it with a little more practice and your help ofcourse.

NOTE FROM FARAH

Bollybeatz has been an enriching experience for me personally...its dance-excercise-socialize all in one! Class time is energising and fun. I have met some wonderful women from all walks of life and sharing time with them has been meaningful - life in Singapore is not mundane anymore! Thanks Nidhi for coming up with this brilliant idea.....wish you all the sucess in the world and may we dance like this for a long long time!!!
